Stone Street, cobbled and closed to traffic, is one of New York's little treasures. In the Financial District, it is lined with places to eat that have real personality. Along with Financier Pâtisserie, a French bakery, and Ulysses, a Greek-Irish pub with its back door on Stone Street, there is Smorgas Chef, a spot for casual Scandinavian food. Open-face sandwiches, including a herring sampler ($12.95) served with lefse, a Scandinavian potato bread, are available at lunch.

More substantial main dishes, like rack of lamb and steamed mussels, can be ordered at dinner. Smorgas Chef has a children's menu, $3.95 to $7.95, that is a little out of the ordinary, with glazed chicken, meatballs and mashed potatoes, a vegetable-and-salad plate and a seafood plate.
